The Marrakech International Marathon holds its 37th edition on Sunday 31 January 2027, with the start announced for 7:45am on Avenue de la Ménara, behind the Sofitel hotel. For many runners flying in from abroad, the weekend fits into three days: arrive on Friday or Saturday, race on Sunday morning, fly out on Sunday evening. Between the finish line and the airport there is still a suitcase to deal with. Here is what has been announced, what to double-check, and where to leave your bags that Sunday, bearing in mind that one of our two Marrakech points is closed on Sundays.
Short answer
On Sunday 31 January 2027, the BoxSpot point you need is Bab Aghmat: a hair salon just outside the Bab Aghmat gate, in the southeast of the medina, open from 9am to 5pm. The point near the Medersa Ben Youssef is closed on Sundays. Bab Aghmat opens at 9am, after the race has started, so you drop your suitcase after you finish and collect it by 5pm at the latest. Price: 9 MAD per hour per bag, 4-hour minimum (36 MAD), never more than 59 MAD for the first bag for the day.
The race weekend: what has been announced
According to the official site marathon-marrakech.com, checked at the end of October 2026:
- Sunday 31 January 2027, 7:45am: marathon start on Avenue de la Ménara, behind the Sofitel hotel. The announced time limit is 5 hours 30. A half marathon is held the same Sunday; its start time is not given on the official marathon page, so check it with the organiser.
- Saturday 30 January 2027, 9am: the "Course for All" fun run, meeting at the marathon village.
- Friday 29 and Saturday 30 January, 9:30am to 7:30pm: bib pick-up, passport required. The official page mentions both Koutoubia square and the marathon village, so check the exact place before you go.
The race is organised by the agency Prêt à Partir. You register online through the SPORT UP platform, or by posting the entry form with a cheque to the agency.
Registration deadline: two dates are going around
The official site says registration is open until 24 January 2027. The worldsmarathons.com listing shows 30 January. Go by the official date of 24 January, and check the marathon site before you book your flights.
Arrive the day before, not on race morning
With a 7:45am start on Sunday and bib pick-up on Friday and Saturday, arriving on Saturday at the latest is the only sensible plan. If your flight lands on Saturday morning and your riad only lets you in from 2 or 3pm, you will spend a few hours with a suitcase in tow, just when you need to collect your bib. We cover that situation in our post on arriving in Marrakech before riad check-in.
On Saturday, both BoxSpot points in Marrakech are open:
- Bazar Posterre, near the Medersa Ben Youssef (north medina, about 3 minutes on foot from the Medersa and 10 minutes from Jemaa el-Fna): 11am to 11pm on Saturdays.
- Bab Aghmat hair salon (just outside the Bab Aghmat gate, southeast medina, about 1.5 km in a straight line from Jemaa el-Fna): 9am to 5pm.
Dropping off before 11am? Go to Bab Aghmat. Want to collect your suitcase in the evening, after the pre-race pasta dinner? Go to Ben Youssef, open until 11pm on Saturdays.
Race Sunday: one point open, from 9am to 5pm
This is the part to get right before you travel. On Sunday 31 January:
- The point near the Medersa Ben Youssef is closed all day, as it is every Sunday.
- The Bab Aghmat point is open from 9am to 5pm. That is the one you need for the afternoon after the race.
Two practical consequences. First, Bab Aghmat opens after the 7:45am start, so you cannot drop your suitcase there before you run. In the morning, leave it at your hotel or riad, or give it to a non-running companion who drops it off at opening time. Second, collection is by 5pm at the latest: even if your flight only leaves at 9pm, pick up your suitcase before 5pm.
Bab Aghmat is just outside the city walls in the southeast of the medina, while the race starts on Avenue de la Ménara, outside the medina. A petit taxi is the easy option. On marathon day some streets may be closed to traffic during the race, so leave a margin. For directions and photos of the spot, see the Bab Aghmat point page or our guide to the Bab Aghmat luggage storage.
Checking out on race day, flying in the evening: a sample plan
- Early morning: you head to the start, the suitcase stays at the hotel. Ask the day before how late you can give back the room.
- Late morning: after the finish, back to the hotel to shower and check out.
- Around 12:30pm: petit taxi to Bab Aghmat. You show your booking, the partner scans your QR code and photographs your bags, with the drop-off time.
- Afternoon: lunch, a hammam, the souks, hands free.
- Before 5pm: back to Bab Aghmat. You show the same QR code: bags are only handed back against that code. Then on to Marrakech-Menara airport (see our post on Marrakech airport).
What it costs: three runner scenarios
Sunday, after the race
Drop-off at 12:30pm, pick-up at 4:30pm: 4 hours, the minimum. You pay 36 MAD for one bag.
A companion drops it off at opening time
Your companion drops the suitcase at 9am and you collect it at 4:45pm: almost 8 hours. Beyond 7 hours an hourly booking is capped at the day price: 59 MAD for one bag.
Saturday, before check-in
You arrive around 10am, leave the suitcase at Bab Aghmat at 10:30am and collect it at 3pm for check-in: 4 hours 30, so 5 hours booked, 45 MAD.
| Duration | Price for 1 bag |
|---|---|
| 4 hours (minimum) | 36 MAD |
| 5 hours | 45 MAD |
| 6 hours | 54 MAD |
| 7 hours or more (full day) | 59 MAD |
| 2 days | 98 MAD |
| Extra bag, daily | 49 MAD on day 1, then 39 MAD a day |
Payment is made online, in dirhams, by card. All the options are on the Marrakech luggage storage page.
