What to do in Tangier on a rainy winter day: a dry itinerary, without your suitcase

Kasbah and medina museums, the American Legation, the Cinémathèque on the Grand Socco: Tangier works very well in the rain. A plan for the day, with your suitcase left 3 minutes from the Grand Socco.
Key Takeaways
In the rain, Tangier has real shelters: the American Legation, Dar Niaba, the Kasbah Museum, the Cinémathèque on the Grand Socco.
Tuesday is the trap: the Kasbah Museum and Dar Niaba close that day; the Legation is reported closed on Sunday. Check before you go.
Wet medina cobbles are slippery and the climb to the Kasbah is steep: go without a suitcase, and with grippy soles.
RS Valises, 3 minutes from the Grand Socco, keeps your bags every day from 11am to 11pm: 9 MAD per hour, never more than 59 MAD for the day for one bag.
November and December are Tangier's wettest months. If your only day in town falls under a downpour, there is no need to cancel: Tangier has enough museums, cafés and cinemas for a day spent almost entirely indoors. The real enemy is not the rain, it is the suitcase you drag over the wet cobbles of the medina. Here is a realistic itinerary, and where to leave your bags in the meantime.
Short answerFirst drop your suitcase at RS Valises, rue Amérique du Sud, about 3 minutes' walk from the Grand Socco (every day 11am to 11pm). Then string together the American Legation, the Dar Niaba museum, the Kasbah Museum and the Cinémathèque on the Grand Socco. Avoid Tuesday, when several museums close. Storage price: 9 MAD per hour per bag, 4-hour minimum (36 MAD), never more than 59 MAD for the day.
First, get the suitcase somewhere dry
The RS Valises point, next to the Gran Teatro Cervantes is on rue Amérique du Sud, near the Fondouk Chejra weavers' souk. The Grand Socco is about 3 minutes away on foot, and the Tanger Ville port entrance less than 10 minutes. It opens every day at 11am and closes at 11pm, so you can collect your things after dinner.
It works simply: you book online, show your reservation, and the partner scans the QR code and photographs your bags with the drop-off time. To collect them, you show the same QR code. The neighbouring Cervantes theatre is under restoration: admire the façade, but don't plan on going inside. Indoor shelters worth the detour
The American Legation (lower medina)
At 8 rue d'Amérique, this lower-medina palace was the first property the United States owned abroad. Today it houses a museum and cultural centre (TALIM): paintings, old maps, a wing devoted to the writer Paul Bowles, and a courtyard. According to Le360 (August 2026), entry costs 20 dirhams and it closes on Sunday, but the official site legation.org also lists weekend hours. Check legation.org before you go.
Dar Niaba, the house of diplomacy
In the medina, the former 19th-century foreign affairs headquarters tells the story of the era when Tangier hosted foreign legations. Allow 20 to 30 dirhams according to Le360. The museum closes on Tuesday.
The Kasbah Museum and its neighbours
At the top of the medina, the former Dar el Makhzen palace houses the Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures, built around a courtyard. Next door, the contemporary art space occupies the former prison, and the Ibn Battouta space, in the Borj Naam, is devoted to the traveller born in Tangier. Le360 reports a combined 30-dirham ticket for the museum and the art space, both closed on Tuesday; Lonely Planet gives hours of 10am to 6pm. Confirm on site, especially on public holidays.
The Cinémathèque de Tanger, on the Grand Socco
Housed since 2006 in the former Cinéma Rif, an Art Deco hall on the Grand Socco, the Cinémathèque screens art-house films and has a café. It is the ideal shelter from a late-afternoon shower: tea while you read the programme, then a screening. The programme changes, so check its social media or ask on site.
And if the sky clears: Café Hafa
Founded in 1921 on the Marshan cliff, Café Hafa and its terraces facing the Strait are a classic. Its stepped terraces are mostly open to the sky, so save it for a dry spell. Bring cash, as cards are reportedly not accepted.
An itinerary for a rainy day
11am: drop the suitcase at RS Valises, then 3 minutes to the Grand Socco.11:30am: walk down into the lower medina to the American Legation. Allow an hour to an hour and a half.1pm: lunch under cover in a medina restaurant, around the Petit Socco.2:30pm: visit Dar Niaba.3:30pm: climb to the Kasbah, or take a petit taxi if the rain gets heavier, then the Kasbah Museum and the contemporary art space.5:30pm: depending on the sky, tea at Café Hafa or back to the Grand Socco for the Cinémathèque café and a film.Evening: dinner in town, then collect the suitcase before 11pm.
The Tuesday trap. The Kasbah Museum, the contemporary art space and Dar Niaba close on Tuesday. On that day, stick to the American Legation, the Cinémathèque and the Galerie Delacroix (rue de la Liberté, free entry, closed on Monday according to Le360). Why a suitcase has no place in the medina in the rain
From the Grand Socco, the medina drops towards the port and then climbs back up through lanes and stairways to the Kasbah. In the rain, cobbles and steps get slippery, and a wheeled suitcase means lifting, braking and blocking the way. Without bags, with a folding umbrella and shoes that grip, the same loop becomes a stroll again.
