Key Takeaways
- Since the return to GMT on 20 September 2026, Friday prayer falls at around 12:15 to 13:00 depending on the city and the season.
- Small medina shops and public offices tend to slow down or close around the prayer; trains, buses, cafés and main squares carry on.
- The Cash Plus point in Tangier closes from 14:00 to 15:00 on Friday, the Ben Youssef point in Marrakech closes at 22:00 instead of 23:00; the other points keep their hours.
- Same price everywhere: 9 MAD per hour per bag, 4-hour minimum (36 MAD), never more than 59 MAD for the day for the first bag.
You are taking the train to Marrakech on a Friday, switching riads in Tangier, or you planned your big souk day for that date. Good news: Friday is not a closing day in Morocco. But it is the day of the main congregational prayer, and midday does not look like it does the rest of the week. Here is what really changes, what keeps running, and how to plan a travel day that does not run into a lowered shutter.
Short answer
On Friday, the midday prayer takes place at around 12:15 to 13:00 depending on the city and the season (Morocco went back to GMT on 20 September 2026). Around that time many small shops, especially in the souks, close for one to two hours, and public offices slow down. Trains, buses, cafés, hotels and the main squares stay busy. At BoxSpot, two points change their hours that day: Cash Plus Riad Ahlan in Tangier closes from 14:00 to 15:00, and Bazar Posterre Ben Youssef in Marrakech closes at 22:00 instead of 23:00. The others keep their usual hours.
What time is Friday prayer?
Friday prayer (al-jumu'a) replaces the midday prayer, dhuhr. It starts with a sermon, followed by the prayer itself: allow roughly 45 minutes to an hour at the mosque. Its time follows the sun, so it shifts a little with the city and the season.
One change matters for 2026: Morocco went back to GMT on Sunday 20 September 2026, after years on GMT+1. On the clock, the prayer therefore falls about an hour earlier than before. In Tangier, calendars based on the Ministry of Habous method put dhuhr at around 12:15 in mid-October; further south, in Marrakech, it is a little later. Keep a window of 12:15 to 13:00 in mind, and if an appointment depends on it, check the day's time in a prayer app that follows the Habous method.
Guides written before September 2026 often mention a break "between 12:30 and 14:30": that was right under GMT+1, so shift it by about an hour.
What tends to close or slow down
There is no single rule: each shopkeeper decides. These are the patterns you will see, to be checked on the spot.
- Shops in the souks and medinas: this is where the break shows most. Many stalls close around the prayer, and some only reopen late in the afternoon, or not at all. Friday morning and the end of the day are safer for shopping.
- Public offices: they open on Friday, but the midday break is longer and the afternoon quieter. Avoid booking an errand (consulate, town hall, bank) just before or after the prayer.
- Some agencies and small neighbourhood shops: they may close for an hour, sometimes a little after the prayer, for the family lunch.
- Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca: guided tours pause during Friday prayer. Time slots change with the season: check the schedule on the Foundation's official website (fmh2.ma) before you go.
What stays open
- Transport: ONCF trains, Al Boraq, buses and petits taxis run normally. Taxis can be a little harder to find just before the prayer.
- The main squares: Jemaa el-Fna in Marrakech or the Grand Socco in Tangier stay lively, even if activity drops at midday.
- Hotels, cafés and restaurants: most stay open. Friday is couscous day in many families and popular restaurants: a good moment to try one.
- Supermarkets and shopping centres: they generally keep their hours.
For the other days of the week (banks closed at the weekend, weekly souks, Eid), our article what is closed, and on which day, in Morocco covers it all. Here we stick to Friday.
BoxSpot points on Friday
BoxSpot drop-off points are neighbourhood businesses, and two of them adjust their hours on Friday. Here are the points in Tangier, Marrakech, Rabat and Casablanca:
| Point | On Friday |
|---|---|
| Tangier, Cash Plus Riad Ahlan (Al Izdihar roundabout) | 9:00-14:00 and 15:00-21:00 (break 14:00-15:00) |
| Tangier, RS Valises Gran Teatro Cervantes | 11:00-23:00, as every day |
| Tangier, Anabelle Para Plaza de Toros | 15:00-22:00, as every day |
| Marrakech, Bazar Posterre Medersa Ben Youssef | 11:00-22:00 (instead of 23:00) |

| Rabat, Saberbest Place de Russie | 9:00-22:00, as every day |
| Casablanca, Troplo Coffee near Casa-Voyageurs | 7:00-22:00, as Monday to Thursday |
The one to remember is the Cash Plus Riad Ahlan point: if you plan to collect your suitcase at around 14:30 on a Friday, you will find the door closed. Pick up before 14:00 or after 15:00. In Marrakech, the Bazar Posterre point near Medersa Ben Youssef closes an hour earlier on Friday evening: for a late dinner on Jemaa el-Fna, collect your bags before 22:00. Each point's real hours are shown day by day before you pay.
Planning a travel day on a Friday
- Mornings for the souks and errands. Until about 11:30, everything runs as usual.
- Midday for lunch or travel. Put the couscous, the train ride or some downtime between 12:00 and 14:00, rather than a shopping round.
- Afternoons for monuments and walks. Gardens, ramparts, seafronts and main squares do not depend on the stalls' hours.
- Bags outside the breaks. Drop off before noon or after the prayer, and check the point's hours for that day in your booking.

At 9 MAD per hour, an hourly booking reaches its cap after about six and a half hours: you pay 59 MAD for one suitcase. With a second bag, add 49 MAD, so 108 MAD.
Four hours in the Tangier medina
