Tarifa–Tangier by ferry: what actually fits between the first and the last boat

Tarifa to Tangier is the shortest link between Europe and Africa: one hour of sea, two continents. The question everyone asks before booking is not «is it worth it» — it is «how much time do I actually get». Here is that calculation, without the optimistic rounding. Short answer Allow one hour at sea and fifteen to thirty minutes to clear the terminal. In summer Morocco runs one hour behind Spain, so a boat leaving Tarifa at 9am lands you in Tangier at about 9am local time. With the last return in the early evening, that is eight to ten usable hours — plenty for the medina, the kasbah and lunch, provided you are not carrying a bag through all of it. The detail half of all travellers miss: Tarifa and Algeciras do not land in the same place From Tarifa, the boat docks at Tangier Ville port, a few hundred metres from the medina. You walk off and you are there. From Algeciras, the boat docks at Tangier Med, a freight port some forty kilometres east of the city. You then need a shuttle or a taxi: another 45 minutes to an hour each way. For a day trip, the Tarifa crossing is not «one option among several». It is the only one that leaves you time on the ground. The time difference works in your favour (in summer) Morocco stays on GMT+1 all year. Spain moves to GMT+2 in summer. So from April to October it is an hour earlier in Morocco. You leave Tarifa at 9am, you sail for an hour, and it is 9am when you step off. In winter both countries share the same time, and the free hour disappears. During Ramadan, Morocco moves back one further hour, making the gap two hours in summer — and it is also the period when many cafés stay shut during the day. Operators publish schedules in each port''s local time. Check which zone your return ticket is written in: it is the single real source of error on the day. What eats time on arrival Passport control happens on board on the fast ferry: Moroccan police run a desk during the crossing. Go early, before the queue. Without the entry stamp you will not clear the terminal exit. You need a passport — a European ID card is not enough to enter Morocco. Clearing the terminal takes ten to twenty minutes depending on the crowd, and puts you on the port, walking distance from town. On the way back, be at the terminal an hour before departure: there is a Moroccan exit check. The real time budget for the day 9:00 — off the boat, through the terminal. 9:30 — up to the Petit Socco, then the Grand Socco, ten minutes on foot from the port. 10:30 — the kasbah, its museum and the terrace over the strait; on a clear day you can see the coast you came from. 13:00 — lunch in the medina or up by the Grand Socco. 15:00 — Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules if you take a taxi (two hours there and back), or the corniche and the new-town cafés if you stay on foot. 18:00 — back towards the port. That plan holds on one condition: carry nothing. Tangier climbs. From the port to the kasbah it is a continuous cobbled slope with steps — a travel bag will cost you roughly one sight. Where to put your things when you step off This is the blind spot of every day trip: Tangier Ville port has no left-luggage office, and you often land with a beach bag, a purchase, or a suitcase if you are carrying on by train.
